Goals

Five Years

Charlie 'Tremendous' Jones teaches us to read and meet people with similar goals. The speaker Charlie 'Tremendous' Jones often teaches us the following:

"Five years from now, you will be the same as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read."

Charlie's philosophy is simple and it states that there are only two factors that affect how much we grow.

Charlie urges us to do two things. Firstly, he suggests that we find a peer group of people who have similar goals and ambitions to us, so that we can grow and share together. He urges us to attend seminars and networking events where we can find mentors and learn from people who have already achieved similar goals to the ones we have set ourselves.

Dreaming

Dreams are important at night and in the day!Zig Ziglar once spoke about an experiment that was done to determine how important dreams are for us.

Scientists tested several volunteers in the following way. Each rested and fell asleep. Just as they were about to enter a state of dreaming, they were woken up. They were then allowed to return to sleep.

After one day of this experiment, the volunteers were irritable. After two days, they became depressed. After three days, some were in a state where they needed psychological attention. It was at this stage that the experiment was stopped due to concerns regarding the wealth fare of the participants.

The conclusion of this experiment was that we all need dreams when we are sleeping.

Powerful Conversations

Judith and Mr. Van Hook today.Judith Norton is now a successful career woman who has accomplished many of her lifelong dreams.

The reason for her success is one conversation that she had many years ago with one of her college professors, Roger Van Hook.

Judith struggled through school. As a result of this struggling, she never believed that she could go to university.

When Judith entered community college, Mr. Van Hook was one of her teachers.

Measuring Your Own Goals

Tony Robbins used to measure his success according to those around him.One of the biggest reasons why people fail is because they measure their own goals and results in comparison to others.

If they have run 20 minutes, they will feel discouraged that their friend has run for 45 minutes. If they have made $500 profit, they will feel disappointed that they have not made as much as their competitor who has made $700.

We have learnt to do this in school. If someone gets 9 A's and we only get 5, we often do not measure how successful we have been in achieving 5 A's. In stead, we compare our achievement to that of the person who achieved 10 A's.

The 3% Rule

Set your main goal into small mini-goals.The reason why most people fail to achieve their goals is because they try and set goals that are too big.

They set goals such as losing a stone in weight, finding a new job or buying a new car.

By just looking at the size of the goal, most people get frightened.

The most successful people in the world achieve their goals because they break them up into small and manageable pieces. They set their main goals up into 20, 30 or even 40 mini-goals and see the completion of a mini-goal as a percentage of the completion of the main goal.

Cycling Around the World

Mark Beaumont cycled around the world in record time.Mark Beaumont, a British cyclist, is motivated by being the fastest and being the best.

Last Friday, Mark completed his goal of cycling around the world solo. He completed this is just 195 days, which is a new world record and has replaced the previous one of 276 days.

However, Mark's journey has not been without incident. He has had to endure floods, road rage and also being knocked off of his bike by an elderly motorist who drove through a red light. However, Mark's persistence and determination has caused him to succeed.

The Bucket List

The Bucket List is a movie about setting goals and living the life of your dreams. There is a movie called the Bucket List which stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.

In this movie, both of the lead characters are told that they have a maximum of one year to live.

Most people, upon hearing such news, give up on life and do not recover. Jack and Morgan's characters, however, do the opposite and create a Bucket List.

How Far Ahead Do You Think?

Stalin used long-term thinking to transform Russia.Imagine you are walking down the road in New York City and see a homeless person on the street. There is a large chance that his or her thoughts are about mainly about the near future, maybe towards the next hour.

Imagine that you carry on walking and see a hot-dog stand. Chances are that the hot-dog stand attendant’s thoughts are mostly tending towards what will happen today.

Imagine then walking into a shop. The chances are that the salesman’s thoughts are largely focused towards this week.

Imagine then meeting the owner of the shop. Their thoughts will mainly be focused towards the next month or so.

Late Achievers

Walt Disney told us that we are never too old to achieve our childhood dreams.Did you know that Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonalds did not sell his first hamburger until he was in his fifties? Did you know that Charles Darwin did not publish his first book until he was almost 50? Did you know that Colonel Sanders did not franchise the first KFC until he was in his sixties?

We live in a society which is youth focused. We are led to believe that only young people have the opportunities to turn their dreams into reality?

Whenever we turn to the media, we see only portrayals of either young people who are doing great things or old people who did great things when they were young. We rarely see old people who are being recognized for achieving late in life.

Setting Big Goals

Tim Ferris encourages us to set goals that are bigger than other people's goals. In his book, the Four Hour Work Week, Tim Ferris proposed something radical.

Tim, like most inspirational writers, encourages us to set big goals. However, what separates Tim from the others is the logic behind what he says.

Tim says that if you set normal goals, then you have the same goals as everyone else. Due to this, there is greater competition in achieving it.

A simple example of this is if we take money. If you ask most people about their money goals, they will say that they want to be a millionaire.
