The Guest House

Rumi teaches us to welcome each emotion. The Sufi poet Rumi beautifully illustrates how we should each day. He begins his poem, The Guest House, with these lines.

"This being human is a guest house, every morning a new arrival".

As he continues the poem, he describes that each guest is an emotion that we feel. Joy, anger, frustration, jealousy, love, despair and the mirage of other emotions are all guests that visit us during the day. When we start the day, we often do not know which emotions will arrive and when they will arrive.

Rumi further emphasises that no matter which guest comes and which emotion is experienced, embrace each emotion and make it feel at home. Do not worry that it might do you damage or that it might harm you, it is your guest and your duty to look after each emotion that you experience.

The reason for this, Rumi states is that we should "Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent, as a guide from beyond".

Throughout life we experience emotions. Whenever we feel good emotions, we know that we are being true to ourselves and are doing good. Whenever we feel negative emotions, we know that we have gone against our nature and are experiencing emotional pain as a result.

Throughout the day, try to keep track of your emotions. Embrace each emotion and try to understand the message that it is giving you.
