The Marathon

This concept is one that comes out of Ancient Greece. Pheidippides, an Athenian messenger, was sent by his generals to Sparta in order to secure help for the dwindling Athenian Army. Athens was under great pressure from the hordes of Persians that had come to attack it. Without help from Sparta, Athens would have easily been captured. The great challenge was to get word to Sparta, some 250km, as a matter of urgency. Pheidippides ran this mammoth distance in thirty six hours. As a result of his heroism, he saved Athens. The 92 Year Old Marathon Runner: Yesterday, during the London Marathon, countless individuals of all ages took part in a bid to raise money for charity and to test their own physical and mental stamina. The most interesting of all of these runners was one Mr. Singh, a 92 year old runner who successfully completed the Marathon. More importantly, however, is that ever since he was 89, he has been ran the course quicker every single year! It proves that our own limitations are only in our mind.
