Sleep - An Experiment

Do we really need 8 hours of sleep per night?Throughout our lives, we have been conditioned to believe that we need 8 hours sleep.

Scientists tested this theory and their results proved to be remarkable.

During the experiment, scientists monitored volunteers to study their sleeping habits. All of the volunteers were placed in an environment where they could not see whether it was day or night outside. They also had no access to watches, clocks or any other instrument to tell them what time it was. Similarly, their meals were served randomly so that they could not estimate what time it could be.

All of these volunteers had activities and resources to stimulate their mind whilst they were being monitored.

At the end of the experiment, it was found that each person slept, on average, just 4 hours per day. After the experiment, medical and IQ tests showed that there had been no deterioration due to this, in fact the opposite had occurred.

The scientists concluded that there are two key reasons why we believe we need so much sleep. The first is that we have been conditioned to believe we need 8 hours and we start worrying if we do not fully get them. The second is that we often are bored and unfocused and have nothing better do.

Throughout history, some of the greatest men and women survived on much less sleep than we do today. Leonardo da Vinci slept about 4 hours per day. Churchill often worked through the night and slept only a few hours.

How much more could you achieve if you sacrificed an hour of sleep and devoted it on a goal that you otherwise do not have time for?

experimetal proof

As a scientist I need to see the actual proof behind the facts printed in your articles. In the future could you please cite all your work so myself and others can reference the actual papers written by the investigators of studies mentioned in your notes.
Science is not quite so simple just cause ou discover something its not a closed and shut book on that matter, usually this is due to a very minority of scientists sometimes exaggerate their findings so to put their name in the limelight. When other groups try to repeat the same experiments the results produced by the former group are never duplicated.
So please in future cite all articles thanks

almost starting my own experiment...

Hi,

Interesting to see this article on the website. I have been reading about this topic a number of weeks now. Next week, I start a sleeping experiment myself. Goal is to sleep a little over 4 hours per day.

There are some great resources on this topic on Google Groups.

If you want to read more on my experiment, please visit my website.

The extra time will be great for studying and writing. I can't wait to see how this turns out :)

Sleep well...
