2007 - A Positive Reflection

One billion trees were planted in 2007.As we enter a new year there are always reviews of what has happened over the previous 12 months.

However, most of these reviews remember the negative events and the people who have died. Today, we will look at the other side of the story, the positive things that happened last year so that we can hopefully build on those successes this year.

2007 was a record year for charitable contributions with the USA alone donating over $300 billion to charitable causes. This includes an anonymous $100 million Christmas gift to be shared equally between 46 charities in Pennsylvania, USA.

On a health front, we are starting to control the battle against cancer as 2007 saw cancer death rates continue to fall and recovery rates increase.

On an environmental front, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Kenyan Green Belt Movement achieved its goal of planting 1 billion trees. This goal was one that it expected to achieve over many years, however, it achieved it in 2007 alone!

On the world-peace front, the atomic threat of North Korea has subsided as it has agreed to shut down its nuclear weapons facility and commit to peace. Similarly, in Darfur where there has been much turmoil fueled by scarce water and food, a large underground lake has been discovered by satellite imaging that will provide over 1,000 wells to help nourish the nation.
