Daley Thompson and Confidence
Submitted by editor on Mon, 08/11/2008 - 07:51.
Daley Thompson is arguably the greatest athlete that has ever lived. He dominated the decathlon, one of the hardest Olympic events. As a child, Daley wanted to be the best at something in the world. For most of his early years he wanted to be a footballer, until he was introduced to athletics and, in particular, the decathlon. The decathlon, involves the following ten events: 100 metres, 400 metres, 1500 metres, 110 metres hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, javelin and shot-put. Daley had an strong and powerful belief about himself that allowed him to tackle an event with so many disciplines. He believed that he was brilliant at something until proven otherwise. Most of us fear trying things because we feel we might not be good at something. We fear failing. Daley, however, did the opposite. He saw anything new as a chance to prove to himself how good he was. He saw it as a way to fulfil his childhood dreams. If Daley tried something and he was not good at it, he would practice. One Christmas Day, he practiced for four sessions. When he was asked why he did so, he said that his biggest rivals only practiced three times. Daley practiced with one goal, to become so good at his events that his worst performance was better than the best performances of his rivals. Daley Thompson personifies the two biggest keys to success. Firstly, an innate inner belief that you will succeed at everything you do and, secondly, the hunger to practice on a continual basis to constantly improve your performance.
