Battles

Henry Allingham laying a reef in respect of those who died during the first World War. Henry Allingham, aged 108, was the oldest veteran present at the ceremony marking the 90th anniversary of the first World War.

Reflecting back, he said the following:

"Even though we were the victors, this was a battle that nobody won."

During this war, 750,000 British Soldiers lost their lives and millions of European soldiers and civilians lost their lives too.

This great war, which many at the time said would last only a few weeks, ended up lasting years. It was said after the war that this was the war that would end all wars.

In life, we are often faced with one conflict after another. This is true on a national, religious, social and personal basis. Historically, it was the way in which we solved numerous issues. Today, conflict still has a prominent role in the way humanity lives. The problem is that those who have actually lived through the greatest conflicts are growing weak and old. There unified voice is growing weak as there numbers decline. Are we going to hear their message or will our children have to pay for our ignorance in learning the crucial lesson that there are some battles that even the winner does not win.
