The Peace Sign
Submitted by editor on Wed, 04/09/2008 - 08:10.
On Friday, the Peace Sign celebrated its 50th birthday. The Peace Sign was designed by artist Gerald Holtom in London, for an anti-war protest that he was attending. The symbol was printed on clothing and signs and just 10 days later, a photo in Life magazine made this is a famous sign. Although Gerald could have trademarked this symbol, he deliberately did not so that it could be used by people all over the world. Throughout history, several symbols have become famous for various different things. The swastika has been associated with Nazi Germany, the V-Sign with victory and the peace sign with the struggle for peace. What symbols play a significant part in your life? If you were to symbolise yourself as a symbol, what would it be? Bookmark this post with: [ What's This? ] |

Peace Sign
I was somewhat surprised to learn that it the symbol was 50 years old meaning that it was introduced in 1958 and I did not recall any major or "hot" conflict at the time. So I queried Wikipedia and was interested to learn that Mr. Holtom was supporting Nuclear Disarmement. And that the symbol is based upon the semaphore signals for N and D. How truly interesting. A I always thought that it must have had its origination in someones mind during the mid-60's around the corners of Haight and Ashberry in San Francisco. Thank you for the encouraging enlightenment, thought and good feelings!
