For many young people today, their heroes are sports stars. They try to look, act and behave like them.
The marketing departments of many large companies have seen this and signed multi-million dollar contracts with those sports stars to help them promote their expensive clothing lines.
Stephon Marbury, however, is an NBA star who does not agree with this.
Stephon had a difficult upbringing where money was tight. As a result of this, he often did not get the Nike Air Jordan shoes that he always wanted.
When he would ask his mother to buy him $150 shoes, she would simply reply by saying that that $150 was grocery money.
This lesson has stuck with Stephon.
Today, Stephon is one of the stars of the New York Knicks NBA team.
He has had the opportunity to sign multi-million dollar sportswear deals. However, he has not.
In stead, Stephon has set up his own sports line where the clothes that he wears are affordable to everyone. His shoes are $15 and some items are under $10.
Stephon is, in essence, a true hero. Even though he has risen to the top, he has not forgotten the lessons that he was taught when he was young. More importantly, as well as being a basketball hero to millions of people, he is also inspiring millions to value money by ensuring that it is spent the right way.
