Measuring Your Own Goals

Tony Robbins used to measure his success according to those around him.One of the biggest reasons why people fail is because they measure their own goals and results in comparison to others.

If they have run 20 minutes, they will feel discouraged that their friend has run for 45 minutes. If they have made $500 profit, they will feel disappointed that they have not made as much as their competitor who has made $700.

We have learnt to do this in school. If someone gets 9 A's and we only get 5, we often do not measure how successful we have been in achieving 5 A's. In stead, we compare our achievement to that of the person who achieved 10 A's.

As we go on through life, the same happens. If we earn $45,000, we often see it as less than our sibling who earns more. If we have a car that is perfectly running, we often compare it to that of our neighbour who has a Mercedes.

By living your life like this, you will never find happiness as there will always be someone who is smarter, richer, quicker, fitter and more good looking than you are.

Anthony Robbins used to suffer from this. When his book would sell a million copies, he would be discouraged that it did not sell five million like Jim Rohn and Brian Tracy's books sold. He then started to look at it from a different angle and saw that Jim Rohn and Brian Tracy had been doing this for 20 years more than he had. In stead Tony started to get excited by where he could be when he had that much more experience behind him!

The point being made in this

The point being made in this article is a good one: one of the biggest reasons why people fail(feel unhappy) is because they measure their own goals and results in comparison to others.

However, the last paragraph doesn't really support the original claim. Robbins is still comparing himself to others, he is only seeing that he has less experience than them and still wants to compete with the other self-help guru's.

Imo, the best thing to do to get success, is to stop comparing yourself to anyone and really go for something you want, while learning from your mistakes.
