Be a Leader

The Victoria Cross is a medal given to heroes. Many people assume that leaders are people who run businesses or countries.

The truth is that the true leaders are often the people that we least expect.

The Victoria Cross is an award given out for outstanding bravery. It is an award that is rarely awarded and one of the key criteria is that you have had to have been in a life or death situation when you showed outstanding bravery.

Ironically, this award is mostly won by low ranking members of the army. Furthermore, the winners of this award are mostly humble and down to earth people who simply say that they were merely doing their job when they were saving the lives of their colleagues.

The truth is that you do not need to be in a high power position to be a leader. A leader is simply someone who gives 100% commitment to all that they do. It is through their attitude and actions that they inspire others.

How can you be a leader today? In what areas of your life do you provide others with inspiration?

Be a leader

The reasons more Victoria Crosses are won by lower ranks than by officers are:

1. There are far more people of lower ranks than officers, hence proportionately there should be more crosses awarded to lower ranks.

2. Very few officers above the rank of Captain actually see combat, hence their opportunities for winning a Victoria Cross are negligible.

3. The trainig of lower ranks in the UK Army is aimed at instilling the automatic reaction that each person looks out for his fellow privates, corporals etc. - that the unit is as important to a soldier as his own life. Victoria Crosses are often won when this instilled belief seeks actual expression (as in giving one's life for one's comrades) - it has nothing to do with leadership.

4. Finally, if these low ranking people win Victoria Crosses, by being low ranking they are ipso facto non-leaders!
