Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie donated millions to charity. As a child, Andrew Carnegie lived through poverty in his native Scotland.

When Andrew and his family arrived in America, Andrew started working for Pennsylvania Railroad, earning $1.20 a week. He worked his way up the ladder until he became private secretary to the CEO and was earning $35.

Whilst working for Pennsylvania Railroad, Andrew soon realised that the steel industry was starting to flourish and he soon entered it.

After considerable hard work and at the age of 64, Andrew amassed a fortune of $480 million to become the richest man in the world.

Although Andrew's story of creating wealth is similar to that of many entrepreneurs, the real message in Andrew's life is what he did with his wealth.

Andrew once said, "I propose to take an income no greater than $50,000 per annum! Beyond this I need ever earn, make no effort to increase my fortune, but spend the surplus each year for benevolent purposes!"

Indeed, this is what Andrew did. He donated millions of dollars during his lifetime to causes that helped people.

Perhaps his biggest gift was the commissioning of Napoleon Hill to write Think and Grow Rich, a book that has changed the lives of millions of people.

Take some time to think about Andrew's life lessons. What will you do with your fortune? Can you use it to help others improve their lives?
